Rally at Capitol, call 888-412-6570 to protect pensions

With lawmakers returning to Springfield for a one-day special session on bills that would sharply reduce modest pension benefits earned by public employees, the We Are One Illinois coalition of unions will rally in the State Capitol Rotunda at noon today (Friday, Aug. 17).

If you're in Springfield, join the rally in the Rotunda at 12 noon today! The rally will be led by retirees, who along with union leaders will address the crowd. Attendees will lobby lawmakers both before and after the noon rally. Union leaders will testify against pension-cutting legislation at a 9:30 a.m. committee hearing.

If you can't make it to the rally, make your voice heard now:
Call your legislators at 888-412-6570 or use our Click-To-Call tool!
Tell your state representative and senator to oppose House Bill 1447 and Senate Bill 3168, House Amendment 2, along with any other pension-cutting legislation.

By slashing the cost of living adjustment, or COLA, that protects retirees from inflation, these bills would place nearly the entire burden of paying the pension debt on active and retired public employees--even though it was politicians who habitually skipped or shorted required payments who caused that debt. Had the sharply diminished COLA in House Bill 1447 and similar legislation been in place over the past 25 years, a public employee who retired in 1987 would have lost 20% of the cumulative value of their pension to inflation, and fall further behind each year. Earlier this week the We Are One Illinois coalition proposed an alternative pension-funding framework including guaranteed funding, no changes for retirees, a dedicated revenue stream from closing corporate tax loopholes and if those conditions are met, discussion of additional employee contributions to secure their pension benefits.
